Contents & fields

The dataset contains 10-day composite shortwave broadband surface albedo images for 2000-2016 over Canada and surrounding areas, with 36 images per year. Data is in LCC projection at 250 m pixel resolution. A corresponding pixel state dataset (cloud/shadow, snow/ice, water, land, etc.) is also provided. The data is derived from the first seven MODIS TERRA bands (B1-B7, wavelength 459-2155 nm), with B1 and B2 at native 250 m resolution and B3-B7 downscaled to 250 m. Albedo retrieval uses a combined land/snow BRDF model.

  • B1——Band 1, 620-670 nm, 250 m resolution
  • B2——Band 2, 841-876 nm, 250 m resolution
  • B3——Band 3, 459-479 nm, 500 m resolution (downscaled to 250 m)
  • B4——Band 4, 545-565 nm, 500 m resolution (downscaled to 250 m)
  • B5——Band 5, 1230-1250 nm, 500 m resolution (downscaled to 250 m)
  • B6——Band 6, 1628-1652 nm, 500 m resolution (downscaled to 250 m)
  • B7——Band 7, 2105-2155 nm, 500 m resolution (downscaled to 250 m)
  • Shortwave broadband albedo——Shortwave broadband surface albedo converted from seven spectral albedos using empirical polynomial conversion
  • Pixel state——Pixel classification (cloud/shadow, snow/ice, water, land, etc.) for each 10-day period

Research uses

Why this is hard to get on your own

Accessing long-term, high-resolution surface albedo data for Canada and high-latitude regions, but data is served via ESRI REST and may require GIS tools.
