Marine mammal acoustic survey data from sonobuoy deployments on the BROKE-WEST Survey

The dataset description is stored in an Excel workbook with a summary sheet and multiple sonobuoy deployment data log sheets. The summary sheet has one line per deployment. Data log sheets are separated by start date. Each deployment has an initial entry and subsequent rows as a running log. Fields include:

• Observer(real time/post-processing)——Real-time or post-processing observer
• Summary of the sounds——Summary of sounds within the 70-minute sample
• Total recording length (in minutes)——Total recording duration in minutes
• Date——Date
• UTC time of deployment——UTC time of deployment
• Initial latitude (decimal degrees)——Initial latitude in decimal degrees
• Initial Longitude (decimal degrees)——Initial longitude in decimal degrees
• Depth setting of sonobuoy hydrophone (90, 120, or 300m)——Hydrophone depth setting
• National Instruments sound card gain (0, 5, or 10 times)——NI sound card gain
• Ship heading (true degrees)——Ship heading in true degrees
• Ship speed (knots)——Ship speed in knots
• Distance of deployment from CTD location (if applicable)——Distance from CTD station

Research uses

This data can support acoustic monitoring of marine mammals in the Southern Ocean, studies of species distribution and behavior, and development of sonobuoy data processing methods.
